The three-day long 'Ganga Yatra' of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress general secretary of Uttar Pradesh (east), concluded on Wednesday after she offered prayers at Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi – parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This was her fourth temple visit since March 18, when she kicked off her river ride from Prayagraj on Monday.
Priyanka, who is incharge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, was on a three-day boat journey down the Ganga, meeting people living on the banks of the holy river as part of her outreach ahead of the general election beginning on April 11.
She started her day with interaction with party workers at the Chunar Fort and later paid tributes to Lal Bahadur Shastri at the Shastri Chowk and Shastri Memorial, the house of the former Prime Minister in his ancestral village Ramnagar. Party workers followed her around raising slogans like "Gali gali me shor hai, chowkidar' chor hai" and "Dahan karne Modi ki Lanka, aa gai behen Priyanka".
Meanwhile, a minor scuffle broke out between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress supporters when BJP leaders objected to the slogan. BJP supporters had also raised pro-Modi slogans when Priyanka visited the Vindhyavasini Temple in Mirzapur's Vindhyachal on Tuesday.
She also took the boat ride from the Ramnagar Ghat to Assi Ghat, where she interacted with the locals - mainly fishermen, people of the Jain community and women.
Earlier, she attacked PM Modi and said that he should stop thinking that people are fools. "The prime minister has attacked every institution in this country for the last five years, including the institution of which all of you are a part," Priyanka Gandhi told reporters.
"So I think the PM should stop thinking that people are fools and understand that they see through all this," she added.
The Congress general secretary went on to say that she is not afraid of being ‘harassed’. "Even if anything is done, and we are harassed, we will not feel afraid. We will continue our fight against them. The more we are harassed, the stronger will be our fight," she said.
On the first day of her visit, she visited the famous Hanuman Mandir in Prayagraj, followed by trips to the Sita Samahit Sthal temple in Bhadohi's Sitamarhi and the Vindhyavashini temple in Vindhyachal on the second day of her campaign. She also offered a chadar at Kantit Sharif dargah on Tuesday.
