New Delhi:

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who made her political plunge as Congress’ general secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh in January, is unlikely to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, India Today quoted sources as saying.

According to the report, Priyanka may not even address any poll rallies for the party and may continue to work behind the curtains.

She is reportedly focused on strengthening the party organisation structure in Uttar Pradesh, a state where the party is struggling to regain its lost ground, and will face a tough task in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, after being elbowed out of the SP-BSP bonhomie.

Speculations were rife of Priyanka being fielded as a candidate in Uttar Pradesh. However, the first list of candidates released by the Congress only featured her brother and party chief Rahul Gandhi and her mother Sonia Gandhi.

The announcement put an end to speculation that Sonia Gandhi may not contest in the upcoming polls due to health reasons and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may be fielded from her constituency.

Rahul chose Uttar Pradesh for Priyanka’s entry into politics as the politically crucial state sends the highest number of MPs to Parliament, making it a key electoral battleground.

Earlier, Priyanka's involvement with the party was limited to campaigning in Rae Bareli and Amethi Lok Sabha constituencies represented by her mother Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. She also campaigned in 2017 assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, but the party did not fare well.
