Sambit Patra's video raises questions about success of PM Modi’s cooking gas scheme

Sambit Patra shared a video of him having food in a traditional banana leaf plate.

A video tweeted by Sambit Patra, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson and Lok Sabha candidate from Puri, on Sunday, triggered questions about the success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ujjwala Yojana, under which free cooking gas connections are being provided to rural households below the poverty line.

Patra, who is BJP’s candidate from Odisha’s Puri seat, had visited a family in the constituency and shared meal with them. The BJP leader shared a video of him having food. However, what caught the eyes of Twitterati was a woman in the background cooking before an earthen, wood-burning stove, while Patra was having food in a traditional banana leaf plate.

“This is my home, my mother fed me food cooked by her. I also fed her with my own hands. I know service to mankind is the biggest service to God,” he tweeted in Oriya along with the video.

After the video, several people asked questions about the success of the cooking gas scheme under which the government claims to have provided seven crore free connections. During his Independence Day speech, PM Modi had announced that the scheme’s target was raised to eight crore by 2020.

However, the scheme has many critics who claim that BPL families were unable to refill their cylinders due to the high LPG prices and that government's data didn't reflect the actual number of people switched to clean fuel.

Below are some of the tweets raising questions about the scheme:

Some even questioned the success of PM's housing scheme.
