Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday called actor-turned-politician Sunny Deol a ‘showpiece’ after he said that he doesn’t know much about the Balakot airstrikes and India-Pakistan relations. A video of him making admission has gone viral on social media. "While (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi has been taking credit for Balakot, this man (Sunny Deol) does not even know what had happened there," NDTV quoted Captain Amarinder Singh as saying. The BJP has pitted the 62-year-old actor against sitting MP and Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar.
Amarinder Singh also attacked Sunny Deol’s step mother Hema Malini saying "these actors are just showpieces. Hema Malini did not open her mouth once in the Lok Sabha, where she represented Mathura for five years."
Sunny Deol, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Gurdaspur candidate had told NDTV,” I do not know much about issues like Balakot strikes or India's relations with Pakistan. I am here to serve people; if I win maybe I will have an opinion, right now I don't."
Earlier, Sunny Deol had said he is focused on the task ahead and is not affected by his opponents dubbing him an "outsider". "People keep asking me this question (on rivals dubbing him an outsider) and I say, I am not here to reply to what all is being said.
"I have come here to work and serve the people, I have come here to do my job. My job is to understand my people, my constituency, Deol said during his campaign trail here. The son of veteran actor and former MP Dharmendra, Deol has been accused by the opposition of having no understanding about Punjab, and has been termed an "outsider" and a "parachute" candidate.
