Union Minister Maneka Gandhi field her nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections from Sultanpur parliamentary constituency on Thursday. Maneka Gandhi, who had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Piliphit, is fighting the Lok Sabha polls from Sultanpur, which is the constituency of her son Varun Gandhi. The duo swapped their seats this time and Varun is contesting from Piliphit, the current constituency of his mother Maneka Gandhi.
Before filing her nomination, the Union Minister perfomed a havan, a tradition she has been following for quite some time. After performing the 'pooja', she headed towards the district collector from her Shastri Nagar residence in an open 'rath'. Hundreds of supporters and party workers accompanied her during a road show to the collectorate's office.

Currently, the BJP leader is facing a 48-hour ban from campaigning by the Election Commisison over her polarising remarks. Addressing a rally in Sultanpur,Maneka had told gathering of Muslims to vote for her or face the risk of not receiving her help after she is re-elected as minister.
Earlier in the day, Poonam Sinha, wife of Bollywood actor Shatrughan Sinha, had also filed nomination for the Lok Sabha Elections from Lucknow. Poonam Sinha will contest the General Elections on Samajwadi Party ticket. She is pitted against BJP stalwart Rajnath Singh in high-stake battle in Uttar Pradesh’s capital. Her candidature was announced by SP president Akhilesh Yadav on April 17.
