Congress in-charge of Delhi PC Chacko on Tuesday said that the decision on an alliance with Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will be announced later in the day by party president Rahul Gandhi. Chako, who is in favour of an alliance, accepted having problems between the Congress and AAP but expressed hope that the parties will come together to defeat Modi and the BJP.
"Party President to take a final decision today. We've had no word with AAP as we had to take a preliminary decision on our party's political stand whether we wanted an alliance or not. Both parties may have problems but apart from that we've to defeat Modi and BJP, so, we'll come together," news agency ANI quoted Chacko as saying.
The statement from Chacko comes a day after a meeting between Congress’ Delhi unit and party chief Rahul Gandhi. The meeting remained inconclusive which threw the ball into Rahul’s court who is likely to take the final decision.
The Congress had earlier decided to go alone in Delhi after talks with AAP failed and local leaders favoured that the party contests Lok Sabha polls alone. The Delhi Congress leaders felt that "saving" the party was crucial in Delhi in view of impending assembly elections in the state slated later.
Last week, Dikshit and three working presidents Haroon Yusuf, Devender Yadav and Rajesh Lilothia had urged the Congress president not to tie up with the AAP and said that the decision would harm the party in the long run.
