IIFA Awards 2018: Sridevi, Irrfan Khan named best actors; Hindi Medium wins big at star-studded event

It was the third and final day of the Indian International Film Awards (IIFA) 2018 in Bangkok. The gala event, which marked appearances of who's who from the Bollywood, last night bestowed best honours upon various legends for their significant contribution in Indian Cinema.

While Vidya Balan starrer Tumhari Sulu won the Best Picture Award at the IIFA Rocks 2018, held at Bangkok's Siam Niramit theatre, Irrfan Khan was adjudged the Best Actor for his mind-boggling performance in Hindi Medium.

Since Khan is currently recuperating from NeuroEndocrine Tumour, his Haider co-star Shraddha Kapoor accepted the award on his behalf. Tumhari Sulu edged out films such as Hindi Medium and Newton to bag the Best Picture Award on Sunday.

Besides Irrfan Khan, Ranbir Kapoor (Jagga Jasoos), Adil Hussain (Mukti Bhawan), Rajkummar Rao (Newton) and Akshay Kumar (Toilet: Ek Prem Katha) were nominated for the Best Actor Award.

Sridevi, who breathed her last on February 24, 2018, was posthumously awarded the Best Female Actor for Mom. Her husband and producer Boney Kapoor received the trophy on behalf of the actress.

Other nominees included Vidya Balan for Tumhari Sulu, Alia Bhatt for Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Zaira Wasim for Secret Superstar and Bhumi Pednekar for Shubh Mangal Saavdhan.

Apart from Best Actor Award, Hindi Medium also snatched the Best Director trophy for Saket Chowdhary. Chowdhary faced a tough competition from Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Anurag Basu, Amit V Masurkar and Suresh Triveni, who were nominated for Bareilly Ki Barfi, Jagga Jasoos, Newton and Tumhari Sulu respectively.

Meher Vij clinched the prestigious trophy for Best Female Supporting Actor in Secret Superstar while Nawazzudin Siddiqui won the Best Male Supporting Actor Award for his mind-boggling performance in Mom.

Siddiqui received the award from veteran actress Rekha and being emotional the actor dedicated the trophy to late actress Sridevi, who was an important part of the film.

Newton, which is happened to be India's official entry to Oscars 2018, won the award for Best Story for director Masurkar. The award was presented to him by actor Dia Mirza and Raj Nayak.

Talking about the musical section, Arijit Singh was awarded the Best Playback Singer (Male) trophy for Hawayein from Jab Harry Met Sejal. Meghna Mishra won the Best Playback Singer (Female) Award for the track Main Kaun Hoon from Secret Superstar.

The Best Music Direction Award went to the trinity of Amaal Mallik, Tanishk Bagchi and Akhil Sachdeva for their brilliant work on Badrinath Ki Dulhania.

The IIFA Rocks 2018 also witnessed prestigious honours bestowed upon fallen legends of the industry such as Sridevi, Vinod Khanna and Shashi Kapoor.

Anupam Kher, who has over 500 films to his credit, was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the ceremony. His frequent collaborator, Anil Kapoor, introduced the honour and shared an interesting story with the audience.

Kapoor said he had also auditioned for the same role in David O'Russell's Silver Linings Playbook but it ultimately went to Kher.

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who hosted the evening with actor Riteish Deshmukh, left everyone amazed with his dancing prowess. KJo on Sunday set the stage on fire after he shook his leg with Shaava Shaava from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

The sidebar event of the IIFA Rocks 2018, on the other hand, saw some heart thumping appearances by B-town diva Kriti Sanon, Shraddha Kapoor, Zaira Wasim and more. Ishaqzaade actor Arjun Kapoor also set the paparazzis clicking as he stole hearts of many with his black suit-white shirt curation on Sunday.

A colourful blue scarf and ultra cool glasses completed Kapoor's look. The usually conventionally dressed actor was looking way more dashing at the green carpet of IIFA Awards 2018.
