Saif Ali Khan on 'Rangoon' failure: 'It was too clever for audience'

New Delhi:

Saif Ali Khan has finally opned up on the failure of his last release 'Rangoon' and said the movie was too clever for the audience and went over people’s heads as a result of which it bombed at the box office. A Vishal Bhardwaj directorial, 'Rangoon' was a war drama with the backdrop of World War II and featured Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor in the lead.

Interestingly, it was Saif' second collaboration with Vishal after their 2006 release 'Omkara' which was a hit.

Talking about 'Rangoon' debacle, Saif during his interview to DNA, said "It was great reuniting with Vishal, and I think we made a good film but somewhere in the second half, we went wrong. Although, I shouldn’t say this because no filmmaker does this deliberately and all decisions are taken for the betterment of the film, but a couple of great scenes of mine never made it to the film. That was disheartening but I got some good reviews, so it was not all bad. My mother called and said she liked my role. We tried to make a film that was about the Indian National Army and had Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, etc. It was a bit esoteric, and I heard one guy in the theatre said, “Arre, yeh Chinese kahan se aa gaye?” (laughs). Maybe we made a film that went over people’s heads. It was too clever for the audiences."

Earlier, Kangana had also shared her views on the box office failure of the movie and said it was heartbreaking.

Currently, Saif Ali Khan is busy shooting for his upcoming movie 'Chef' which is a remake of Hollywood movie of the same name and revolves around a father-son relationship.

Helmed by Raja Krishna Menon, 'Chef' will release on October 6.
