Azaan row: Suchitra Krishnamoorthi slut-shamed on Twitter, files complaint over derogatory tweets

New Delhi:

Days after Sonu Nigam instigated a controversy with his tweets on 'azaan', the debate once again grabbed the headlines after singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi had to file a complaint over derogatory remarks for her tweet regarding the use of loudspeakers for azaan.

According to the media reports, the Mumbai police has booked four people on the basis of Suchitra's complaint.

Suchitra was trolled on micro-blogging site Twitter after she  wrote about the 'aggressive/ear shattering call' for 'azaan' and cited the use of loudspeakers as 'lowlife and dumb'. The actress even asserted that she does't need loudspeakers to remind of her God and called it a case of 'imposed religiosity'.

Soon the social media got bonkers over her tweet. While many appreciated her opinion, Suchitra even received flak for speaking her mind. Suchitra was called an attention seeker and was even abused on social media, post which Suchitra approached suburban Oshiwara police and filed a complaint.

"Based on her complaint, police registered a case under IPC sections 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 67 (a) (punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act), against four persons," a senior police official said.

The actress/singer had tweeted "Came home at 4.45 am 2 most aggressive/ear shattering call of azaan."

When a Twitter user posted that it was good to wake up at 'Brahma muhurta' (early morning) according to Hinduism, the actress replied, "I wake up at Brahmamuhurt of my own accord & do my prayers & riyaz & yoga. I don't need public loudspeakers to remind me of my God or my duty."

She further said she had no problems with 'azaan' or prayers during decent hours.

"But to be waking up entire neighbourhood at 5 am is not civilized," she had posted.

Interestingly, earlier Sonu Nigam had faced the wrath of netizens after he had tweeted about the same and called the use of loudspeakers for azaan as 'gundagardi'.
