Deepika Padukone received a lot of appreciation for her role as Malti in Chhapaak, but the numbers haven't been very huge and as big as expected. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film has earned Rs 29.13 crore crore in first week of its release
As per a Boxofficeindia report, Chhapaak earned an estimated Rs 75 lakh on Friday, taking the total collections to Rs 29.13 crore. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film traces the journey of Malti (Deepika) and is loosely based on the life of Delhi’s acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
Deepika’s Jawaharlal Nehru University visit was assumed to have affected the film’s performance. Asked if the controversy actually hampered Chhapaak’s box office run, film trade analyst Girish Johar said, ''No, I don’t think so. The film performs on the basis of what it is. The weekend has been decent, Monday is critical for the film. Both the films have an advantage of partial holidays and can improve.''

Talking about the film, Deepika said at an event ''The entire journey was special. I don’t think I can speak of a particular moment or scene as the closest to my heart. I think the entire journey and process has been extremely rewarding. It’s the film I am most proud of, among all that I have done in my career. I am not thinking much about people’s reactions after its release because that is a different aspect, but this film is something I am proud of, and I am proud that the entire team had faith in Meghna’s (Gulzar) vision.''
The film hit the screens on 10 January, 2020 alongside Ajay Devgn's Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. Tanhaji is doing impressive business at the box office. The film collected Rs 10.06 crore on Friday, taking the total collection to Rs 128.97 crore. It crossed Rs 100-crore mark on its sixth day (Wednesday). Till Thursday, the film had earned Rs 118.91 crore.
