Deepika Padukone makes sly dig on Salman Khan's remark on depression

Deepika Padukone who has been a harbinger of mental well being and has talked about her personal experiences if depression recently criticised Salman Khans remarks that he did not have the "luxury of being depressed".

The actress said in a recent interview with Vogue that no one chooses to be depressed.

"The word that best describes my experience of depression is struggle. Every second was a struggle. I felt exhausted the whole time," she told the magazine.

"People confuse it with being a bit sad. A male star said recently that he didn't have the luxury to be depressed. As if depression is a choice!" Deepika said, taking a sly dig at Salman's comments.

Last year, at an event, Salman said, "I see a lot of people getting depressed and emotional, but I can't afford that luxury of being depressed or sad or emotional because no matter what I am going through, it works against me."

Deepika opened up about her struggle with depression to encourage others going through the same thing to seek professional help. She said that in early 2014, she woke up one day "feeling different" and with a "strange emptiness" in her stomach. When she consulted a psychologist, she found out that she was suffering from depression.
The Padmaavat star said that it was her mother, Ujjala Padukone, who realised that she was suffering from depression.

“In my case I didn’t know what I was feeling or going through and fortunately, it was my mother who was my care giver and recognised my symptoms in the early stages.

“I was not feeling motivated anymore, I didn’t know why I wasn’t happy in my life and she was the one who took me to a counsellor who immediately recognised that I needed medical help,” Deepika said.

On October 10, 2015 (World Mental Health Day), Deepika started the Live Love Laugh Foundation to create awareness about mental illnesses and reduce the stigma surrounding them.
