Several Bollywood celebs on Saturday expressed their anger on social media after the authorities began cutting down trees for a Metro car shed in Mumbai’s Aarey Colony adjoining suburban Goregaon which is known as the major green lung of the city.

Voicing his concern, Farhan Akhtar wrote, ''Cutting trees at night is a pathetic attempt at trying to get away with something even those doing it know is wrong. #Aarey #GreenIsGold #Mumbai.''

Shraddha Kapoor, who earlier joined protest against the proposed felling of over 2700 trees in Aarey forest to build a metro car shed, expressed her anger on Instagram. She posted a screenshot of a few news articles writing, ''This is wrong and should not happen'' and ''Mumbaikars Wake Up.''

Alia Bhatt also expressed her anger on Twitter. She wrote, ''There's always been a conflict between development & conservation. Yes, the city needs to build infrastructure to support a growing population. But the city also needs trees & parks & greenery. We need to protect nature like life depends on it. Because it does.#LetMumbaiBreathe.''

Tagging Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, actor Sidharth Malhotra took to Twitter and wrote, ''
Heard the terrible news about the cutting down of trees in #AareyForest started last night! The ecological imbalance this can cause is beyond control & it must stop. I urge the authorities to help #SaveAarey if not for us, for our future generations ðŸ™Â@narendramodi @Dev_Fadnavis.''

Varun Dhawan said cutting down of trees at Aarey is a really 'heartbreaking news.' He wrote, ''This is heartbreaking news. With such an outcry to stop the cutting of trees why is this being allowed mumbai has done enough for the people in power to realise cutting down aarey is something the citizens don’t want.''

Dia Mirza, who is a UN Goodwill Ambassador expressed her worry and tweeted, ''400 trees have been cut in the dead of the night. As citizens sang and joined hands in unity pleading to STOP this massacre. Can’t you see they are UNITED by love!?! Love for nature. Love for our children and our future. #Aarey #ClimateAction #ActNow #ChangeIsComing.''

''Why were trees cut in the dead of the night ? Who gets rich(er) because of this metro car shed? Everything about this is shady from the get go, including how the first signatures for the tree felling were obtained,'' wrote Richa Chadha.

Singer Vishal Dadlani wrote, ''Please read, share and put up your own picture in support of the trees at #Aarey, tagging Maharashtra CM @devendra_fadnavis and PM @narendramodi .#SaveAarey #SaveAareyForest #ClimateChange.''

Ileana D'Cruz shared a video on Twitter and wrote, ''Such awful news.''

Actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar wrote, ''Such a disappointing news on #AareyForest Cutting the trees in the night clearly shows even they know it’s horribly wrong, inhuman. But we can compliment #GretaThunberg act blind n deaf to our own #Aarey n think we did our bit to the #environment.’’
