India is a free country today and Gandhi has a great contribution to it. For more than 200 years, the Britishers had ruled over India, and while many violent protests were seen during their reign, it was Gandhi’s peaceful strike that shook the foundation of their empire. Gandhi, a pacifist, led the Indian National Congress in 1921, reorganised the party’s constitution around the principle of Swaraj (complete political Independence from the British).
During the freedom movement, Mahatma Gandhi was also arrested on March 10, 1922, under the sedition charges, for which he served for two years, of a 6-year prison sentence.
