Govinda has been away from limelight with no major films for some time now but recently in an interview has revealed much about his career, roles thet were offered and were rejected and spat with good friend David Dhawan.
The king of comedy films of the 90s who has delivered many blockbuster movies like Partner, Coolie No 1, Hero No 1, Shola Aur Shabnam and others in collaboration with director-producer David Dhawan recently revealed much about his fallout, the reason behind which was little known till now.
In a recent interview with India TV, Govinda opened up on his spat with David Dhawan.
When Govinda was accused of not living up to his relations, in the context to his fight with David Dhawan, he said, "He can ask me this question only when his son (Varun Dhawan) makes 17 films with him. I do not think his son will ever do 17 films with him, because he is, after all, David Dhawan's son. He is educated. I never realised the meaning of doing 17 films with a director. It was Sanjay Dutt who told me to give work to a fellow Punjabi (David Dhawan). I used to give work to fellow Punjabis at that time. I liked David and did many hit films with him. I did not even treat my relatives as well as I treated him. Even with my brother, who is a director, I did not do 17 films."
Govinda also revealed that the of the 2013 film Chashme Baddoor was given by him, but the director chose to cast Rishi Kapoor in it instead of him.
"When I completed 17 films with him, I told him the subject of Chashme Baddoor and he started the film with Rishi Kapoor. And when he was shooting the film, I called him and he said, 'Tu sun toh mein kaise film bana raha hoon.' Then I said, 'Tu mujhe kehta toh - subject bhi utha lia',"said Govinda.
The final nail in the coffin of the relationship between the two happened when Govinda heard David talk about him on the phone. The actor said, "After I left politics, I told my secretary to keep the phone speaker on, so that I could listen to what he (David Dhawan) was saying. I heard David saying, 'Chi-Chi (Govinda's nickname) is questioning a lot.' He was telling my secretary, 'I do not want to work with Govinda anymore. Tell him to do some small bit roles.' This shocked me and I decided never to work with him. After 4-5 months, I again rang him up just to find out if he would give me a guest appearance in his film. He then never rang me back. I am revealing this in public after so many years. I think he is under somebody's influence. I do not think he is that same David Dhawan who I used to know," said the actor.
Govinda reasoned why he is talking about this after so many years as he thinks David is under somebody's influence. "I am revealing this in public after so many years. I think he is under somebody's influence. I do not think he is that same David Dhawan who I used to know,†he was further quoted.Â
David and Govinda did create magic on the screen. We hope they mend their differences soon and come back together.
Co-incidentally, Dhawan is currently remaking his 1995 blockbuster Coolie No 1 with his son Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan in the lead roles. The original film had Govinda and Karisma Kapoor in the lead roles. The writer-director revealed that the film will have “plenty of humour and colour, larger-than-life songs†and will be helmed on a “lavish scale†and will release in May 2020.
