Karan Johar’s 2019 ambitious project multi-starrer Kalank that had the best of its star cast and a grand setting failed to impress audience and drew much backlash on social media handles. With period drama’ Takht’ Karan gets back to the director’s chair gain, but opening up about his failures as a filmmaker KJO revealed that multi-starrer family drama Kabhi Khusie Kabhi Gham after its release came as a reality check for him.

Karan opened up about the film on Audible Suno’s show Picture Ke Peeche. The director said that he was shocked when the film did badly in terms of reviews and awards. “K3G is the single biggest slap in my face and my biggest reality check,” he said. Elaborating on what made him make the movie he revealed he wanted to bring together a stellar star cast and then mixed the storyline of Kabhie and family values of Hum Aapke Hain Koun to bring out a mushy family entertainer.

Talking about Kareena’s famous character of Poo, Karan said: “Poo, OMG! You should go and check online. There are lines, memes and games on Poo, but at the time only Bebo and I loved her character.” He added, “I am Poo, that’s who I am, I wrote all the lines, picked the clothes, everything.”

Karan has nine films to his credits as a director. His first directorial was Kuch Kuch Hota Hia that was blockbuster. The charm however failed to spread in his other movies like Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, A Dil Hia Mushkil,  Bombay Talkies.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham stars Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan in leading roles, with Rani Mukerji appearing in an extended cameo. The films is a love story struggling with the values of an influential and conservative Indian family and the class structure in India.
