Padmaavat Controversy: Producers approach Supreme Court against ban in states

New Delhi:

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati, now known as Padmaavat, has been controversy's favourite child since its inception. And as the movie is inching towards its release date (January 25), Padmaavat has once again faced bans in states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana.

Now, the producers of Padmaavat have moved the Supreme Court against the ban on its release being imposed by four state governments. The apex court is likely to hear the case on Friday (January 19).

Reportedly, Padmaavat producers claim that there should not be blanket bans in the states on the movie after receiving a clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The CBFC had recently cleared the film for release with U/A certificate and a set of five modifications.

According to the media reports, the state governments have imposed the ban on Padmaavat release citing law-and-order problems.
Padmaavat, which stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and, Shahid Kapoor in key roles, has been facing a backlash from the Rajput community for allegedly distorting history.

It has been facing severe protests from the community which included vandalising of sets and death threats to Bhansali and Deepika.

In fact, the makers even changed the name of the movie from Padmavati to Padmaavat and claimed that it “upholds the honour of the Rajput community.” A new poster with the new title was also released lately.

Padmaavat is slated to hit the theatres on January 25 and will witness a box-office clash with Akshay Kumar starrer PadMan.
