Shashi Kapoor was reportedly suffering from kidney related problems for several years and was on dialysis

Veteran actor Shashi Kapoor passed away in Mumbai on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 79. The actor was unwell for several months and breathed his last at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital late evening.

His prominent movies include Sharmelee, Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Baseraa (1981), Pighalta Aasman (1985), Doosara Aadmi (1977), Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1973), and Deewaar (1975). 

He made a popular pairing with Amitabh Bachchan. The two appeared in a total of 12 films, namely Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Deewaar (1975), Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Immaan Dharam (1977), Trishul (1978), Kaala Patthar (1979), Suhaag (1979), Do Aur Do Paanch (1980), Shaan (1980), Silsila (1981), Namak Halaal (1982), and Akayla (1991).

He's survived by three children, Kunal Kapoor, Sanjana Kapoor and Karan Kapoor.

He starred in both commercial and art cinema.

He was conferred with Padma Bhushan in 2011 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.

In 1979 he won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi for Junoon; in 1986 he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for New Delhi Times; in 1994 he won the National Film Award Special Jury Award / Special Mention for Muhafiz; in 2010 he won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.

Shashi Kapoor was originally named as Balbir Raj Prithviraj Kapoor. He changed his name to Shashi Kapoor after stepping into movies.

He married English actress Jennifer Kendal in July 1958. Jennifer died of cancer in 1984 which shattered him emotionally. 

Shashi Kapoor was reportedly suffering from kidney related problems for several years and was on dialysis. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for the treatment of severe chest-infection. 

“Shashi Kapoor expired at 5:20 pm on December 4 at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai,” said Dr Ram Narain. 

The funeral will be held on Tuesday morning.

Shashi Kapoor
