Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took to a Twitter to salute those who resisted the Emergency that had been imposed by PM Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur responded to his tweet by saying that his uncles Dev Anand and Vijay Anand were amongst the first to come out against Emergency.

On the 44th anniversary of the Emergency, PM Modi tweeted, "India salutes all those greats who fiercely and fearlessly resisted the Emergency. India’s democratic ethos successfully prevailed over an authoritarian mindset."

Responding to this, Shekhar Kapur tweeted, "Sir, my uncles Dev Anand and Vijay Anand were amongst the first to come out against Emergency. They took out rallies and dared Mrs Gandhi to imprison them. They staked their careers/livelihood on what they believed in. It was a courageous act of defiance."

The filmmaker also shared an Instagram post which explained how veteran actor Dev Anand had resisted the Emergency.

It is to be noted that Dev Anand had actively campaigned against her during the elections and formed a party called National Party of India, which he later disbanded.

Emergency was imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It is considered one of the darkest periods in the history of post-independent India, and had been imposed from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977. The two years saw a political environment that had led to the suspension of election and the curbing of civil liberties in the nation. Then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had justified the Emergency under the explanation that the country was under internal as well as external threat.
