Anubhav Sinha’s new film, Thappad is bringing a positive change in the society. Women and movie critics are coming out in number to thank the filmmaker and the lead actress Taapsee Pannu for bringing a movie on such an important subject of domestic and mental abuse. However not everyone is convinced with the idea that ‘one slap’ can lead to divorce and one among them is this week’s release Baaghi 3 director Ahmed Khan. During one of the promotional events of his actioner, the filmmaker wondered how a slap could decide the status of a relationship!
Concluding that ending a relationship is not the solution but a counter slap is, Ahmed Khan told Mumbai Mirror in an interview, “I found the concept of Thappad very strange. I don’t understand just because the husband slapped his wife, will she leave him forever? If she has a problem, she too should slap her husband twice in return.
“If I ever slap my wife, she can slap me back and end it. If I tell her that I don’t want to be with her anymore, then she can also tell me the same. But, will a slap decide whether a couple can stay together or not? But then, everyone has a different point of view and way of looking at it.”
Taapsee reacting to the comment came up with a kickass reply. Finding the audience the deciding factor Tapsee said, “He makes films based on what he finds correct and it is the same for us. At the end of the day, it is the audience who give out the final verdict.”
Taking a dig at the filmmaker the actress said, may be he is talking about relationships where slap for a slap exists but she wants to talk about relationship where love and respect exists. “H can continue to make films he is comfortable with. We will do what we are comfortable doing,” she added.
Thappad is an attempt at laying bare the deep-rooted and un-settling patriarchy that dominates the society.
