Taapsee Pannu and Anubhav Sinha path-breaking film, Thappad opened to great reviews at theatres but could perform well at the box office. On Day 1, Thappad managed to rake Rs 3.07 crore is the same lines as other women-led females of the year, Deepika Padukone’s Chapaak and Kangana Ranaut’s Panga.
Comparing the Day 1 office collection of Thappad box to other recent releases, the audience is not in awe of the film that deals with a serious subject of domestic abuse The box office numbers on the first have always been on the side of mass entertainer, rom-coms or commercial potboilers. But, the word-of-mouth publicity may help improve the numbers of the film in the coming days.
Thappad narrates the story of a couple played by Taapsee as Amrita and Pavail Gulati when the husband in a fit of rage slaps his wife and things take a drastic turn with the central protagonist not coming in peace with the insult or show of violence she was subjected two. A court room drama takes course as Taapsee as Amrita reassesses her marriage and decides to fight for a divorce.
Film business analyst Taran Adarsh’s tweet said, “which started low in morning shows - gathered speed post noon onwards... Metros - especially #Delhi, #NCR - registered healthy growth towards evening and night shows... Occupancy should multiply on Day 2 and 3... Fri â‚¹ 3.07 cr. #India biz.”

Considering Tappsee’ other movies, the highest performing was Mission Mangal but the movie had an ensemble cast of fort-runners like Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan. Nevertheless, the movie performed better that Taapsee last Bollywood outing Saand ki Aankh that after fighting for a show at theaters with Housefull 4, Made In china garnered 47, 000 on Day one according to Box office India.
Meanwhile, Ayushmann Khurrana’s Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is leading the Box Office Numbers at Rs 46.92 crores with Bhoot following up at Rs 25.02 crore in two weeks.
