It’s no hidden secret that Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit were a ‘thing’ in the 90s and everyone knew about their torrid affair. After working together in several films like Khalnayak, Saajan, Thaanedar, etc, Sanjay and Madhuri reportedly fell in love with each other. According to the industry insiders, the two were pretty serious about each other. However, the two have always remained silent on the subject. They first worked together in the film Khatron Ke Khiladi (1988) and their last outing together was Mahanta (1997).
In a throwback interview, Sanjay Dutt had told a magazine that there was nothing between him and Madhuri. "I wish I had a scene going with Madhuri. But I don't!" Dutt said, when asked if he was implying that he and Madhuri were not dating.
In the same interview, Sanjay Dutt opened up on how Madhuri denying that she was involved with Sanjay Dutt did not have any effect on him. Dutt was in jail when Madhuri said that she had nothing to do with him. Sanjay was arrested for the illegal possession of arms in 1993, under TADA and was sent to jail.
"I didn't get affected by her statement. I have been her colleague and I have done a lot of films with her. See, I need to establish a proper rapport with all my co-stars, it may be Madhuri or Sridevi. For instance, during the first few days of Gumraah I wasn't comfortable, because you know how Sridevi is. She is aloof and I had to get talking to her. So what Madhuri said didn't bother me that much, in fact it didn't bother me at all," Sanjay said.

Dutt also revealed how he handled rumours of the affair when they broke. "This story broke out around the time of Saajan. In fact when the story broke out in the press, she was shooting for Khel in Kenya. So, when we had a schedule of Saajan after that, I went up and said sorry to her. Because she was under public scrutiny for no fault of her," he said.
Now, after almost 22 years, the alleged ex-couple were seen on the silver screen, all thanks to Karan Johar. Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit shared screen space in the period drama, Kalank. The film also starred Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur in prominent roles.
