Veteran Bollywood actor Om Puri consigned to flames; Celebs mourn his death

The last rites of veteran actor Om Puri were performed on Friday evening and several Bollywood celebrities were seen paying their last respects to him.

The 66-year-old actor died of heart attack this morning at his residence leaving not only his family, close friends and colleagues from film industry but also personalities from the world of politics in shock.

The last rites started around 6.45 pm and were conducted by Puri's son Ishaan at the Oshiwara crematorium.

His admirers lined up on the streets to catch a glimpse of the noted star. At around 6pm the actor's body was taken in an ambulance from his residence in suburban Andheri to the crematorium. Before leaving from his residence, a small puja was also performed.

Puri's estranged wife Nandita, son Ishsan accompanied the body along with filmmaker friend Ashok Pandit.

Celebrities like Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Irrfan, Gulzar, Shakti Kapoor, Prakash Jha, Satish Kaushik, Ranvir Shorey, Abhishek Chaubey, Rahul Dholakia, Manoj Bajpayee, Ketan Mehta, Nawazuddin Siddique, Pankaj Kapoor, Ramesh Sippy, Shyam Benegal, Sudhir Mishra and Piyush Mishra others paid their last respects to the actor.

Besides, several celelbs took it to micro-blogging site Twitter to pay their last respects to the veteran actor.

Yuvraaj Singh wrote, "My heartfelt condolences to the family, sad to hear about the pasing away of a veteran & legendary actor Om Puri may your soul rest in peace".

Sachin Tendulkar tweeted, "You will live in our hearts forever through the impressions you have left with your versatility. We will miss you. RIP #OmPuri".

Karan Johar said, "Solid actor....Solid filmography....immense talent.... #RIPOmPuri ....cinema has truly lost a brilliant artist...."

Anupam Kher wrote, "I have known #OmPuri for d last 43yrs. For me he’ll always b a great actor, a kind & generous man. And that is how world shud remember him."

Shruti Haasan said, "RIP Om uncle :( we will miss your talent warmth and laughter always #ompuri #gem #talent #greatsoul".

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur wrote, "That unforgettable moment in film 'Gandhi' where #OmPuri appears for the briefest moment, you knew of the brilliance of this young new actor".
