Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s latest release, Shikara hit the screens this Friday and opened to mixed reviews from the audience. The film stars newcomers Sadia and Aadil Khan in the lead roles and captures the story that chronicles the 1990s exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley. On the first day of its release, the film has collected Rs 1.2 crore. The release of another big film Malang - starring Disha Patani, Aditya Roy Kapur, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Kemmu- may affect Shikara's collection.

Sharing the box-office collection on Twitter, film critic Taran Adarsh wrote, ''#Shikara surprises on Day 1... Released at multiplexes mainly, the biz gathered momentum post noon shows [a norm nowadays]... Needs to double its Day 1 number on Day 2 and maintain the trend on Day 3 for a respectable weekend total... Fri ₹ 1.20 cr. #India biz.''

Shikara is a love story of Professor Shiv Kumar Dhar and his wife Shanti. The film narrates how the couple flee the Valley with thousands of other Kashmiri Pandits and started a new life as refugees in their own country.

Meanwhile, a Kashmiri Pandit woman lashed out at Vidhu Vinod Chopra at a screening of his new film Shikara. The filmmaker had arrived at the screening to get a firsthand public review of his film. A video that has gone viral shows the woman screaming at Chopra for "commercialising" the entire issue of Kashmiri Pandit exodus, adding that he did not portray the true suffering of the community -- including genocide, mass rapes and murders committed by Islamic radical groups - in his film.
