Women are getting more importance in society: Big B

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan says women are getting more importance in society and that is reflected in the contemporary cinema as well. The veteran actor said a few decades ago, on-screen heroes fought for heroines but today things have just got better in terms of the latter's portrayal and roles.

"I think during 1970s, the films that were made had the men (actors) fighting for the heroine to save her from bad guys. We were not showing our 'mardaani'. There was poetic justice there about good over evil and saving women from villain," said the actor in Mumbai.

The 73-year-old was talking to reporters at a press conference of his latest release "Pink", a social thriller which deals with the issue of female empowerment and is receiving accolades. "Women have got more importance in films and society. Films and characters change with what happens in society. We are just presenting the mirror of society through our films."

Asked if actors should offer solutions to issues facing the country and society, Big B said, "We can be part of what is going on." Bachchan is overwhelmed by the response his latest film has generated. "I am proud with the response for "Pink". It feels great that the message the film wanted to convey has reached people in right way."

"Whenever there is too much of praise doubt arises if something wrong has happened. But when a lot of people said good things about the film, I felt its for real," he said. The megastar had not imagined "Pink", in which he played the role of a lawyer, would generate this kind of positive response. "The idea (of the film) was great I loved it.

I told yes for this film within minutes...that time I had no idea about my role, story and director. With what was happening around society a story like this needed to be told," he added. Director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury also felt overwhelmed by audience and critic response to his debut Hindi film. "I thank my entire team. Its not a commercial venture...Its personal."
