While International Women's Day has been celebrated with much enthusiasm and zeal across the globe, Padmaavat actress Deepika Padukone is elated to join Variety's International Women's Impact Report 2018 on Thursday.
Deepika ranked 33 in the list, reported by Variety. The list honours Deepika for her outstanding performances in Bollywood over the years and emerging through several controversies prior to the release of Padmaavat gracefully.
Being overwhelmed an excited Deepika took to micro-blogging site Twitter and wrote, "Honoured & humbled joining these amazing achievers!Thank You @Variety ...🙏🏽"
Apart from Deepika, Variety's International Women's Impact Report 2018 also features 49 other celebrities from the entertainment industry including Salma Hayek, Emma Watson, Guneet Monga, Gal Gadot, and J K Rowling.
"The star of the recent Bollywood blockbuster "Padmaavat" faced death threats and verbal abuse from various fringe groups with poise and elan. Deepika Padukone, whose father, Prakash, was a star badminton player, used to participate in the sport before becoming a model. She is now one of the highest-paid Indian actresses and has made the leap from Bollywood movies such as Om Shanti Omand Chennai Express to Hollywood titles including xXx: Return of Xander Cage last year. She is also philanthropically active, starting her own Live Laugh Love Foundation, which focuses on mental illness," Deepika's bio on variety.com reads.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's much-anticipated period drama Padmaavat had been mired in the controversy since inception. Several fringe outfits including Rajput Karni Sena staged protest against the Deepika Padukone starrer across the country. They accused Bhansali of distorting historical facts in the flick.
However, after a lot of fracas over its controversial story line, Padmaavat finally hit the theatres on January 25, 2018. The movie also stars Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in pivotal roles.
Talking about another Bollywood celebrity in the Variety list, Guneet Monga is one of the well-known female producers in India and had produced critically acclaimed movies like 'The Lunchbox' and 'The Ashram'.
"There have been several times where I have not been taken seriously and have had to work twice as hard just because I am a young woman, but I have never let that affect my state of mind towards the end goal of putting together the stories we need to tell," IANS quoted Monga.
The list acknowledges the works of 50 women, who are leading the way at a time when the entertainment business has become increasingly global and women's rights are in the spotlight.
