'Netflix is evolving', movies will get theatrical releases ahead of streaming debut

New Delhi:

Netflix Inc. will release three films in theatres ahead of its streaming, breaking the traditional notion of releasing on both the platforms at the same time. This brings the streaming giant more in line with Hollywood studios and increases the chances of company’s films to win awards as well as better recognition.

Netflix in an emailed statement revealed that Roma will be screened exclusively in theatres week ahead of its streaming debut. Directed by the Oscar-winner Alfanso Cuaron, the movie is predicted to win big as a favourite in Academy Award for best picture. Along with Roman, Bird BoXand The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs will also get exclusive theatrical releases in the US and overseas.

Netflix has been making high-budget movies and the content is worthy of receiving Academy Awards, popularly known as Oscars.

“There’s been an overwhelming response to all of our films this festival season,” Scott Stuber, Netflix’s film group head, said in the statement. “This plan is building on that momentum. Netflix’s priority is our members and our filmmakers.”

Roma, a black-and-white, Spanish-language film about a housekeeper in Mexico, will start playing in cinemas in Los Angeles, New York and Mexico on November 21 and later expand to other cities and countries.
