The Current War, one among the projects that caught got up during the wake of the original distributor, The Weinstein Company, later taken over by 101 studious had its first official trailer release on Tuesday. Titled ‘The Current War’ named after the 19th century battle over electricity, “war of the currents’’, the Martin Scorsese produced period drama opens with Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison, the famed inventor ready to light up Manhattan city using his DC technology. The trailer then makes the entry of rival, Nicholas Hoult as Nikolia Tesla and Michael Shannon as George Westinghouse a businessman who believes that he and his partner, Tesla have found the true way of the future for bringing electricity to America - namely, Tesla's AC current.
The 2.38-minute trailer then gives us a glimpse of one of the biggest corporate battle along the way in the battle of acquiring power, literally. With Benedict’s line such as ‘I hope you brought your check-book’ as he showcases his DC invention to the citizens of Manhattan, to ‘’This is a battle of the greatest minds of America,” to which Westinghouse threatens, “If you want to be remembered, it’s simple: Shoot a president. But if you prefer to have what I call a legacy, you leave the world a better place than you found it’’ the trailer does not shy away from portraying the historical feuds of the greatest minds.
Written by Michael Mitnick (The Giver) and directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon The Current War actually premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival but was held back following the Harvey Weinstein scandal. Also starring Tom Holland, The Current War his the big screen on October 11.
