Robert Downey Jr who kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2008 with Iron Man as a self-described ‘genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist’ deserves an Oscar says Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo. Endgame, which is now predicted to become the highest grossing movie of all time even surpassing James Cameroon’s Avatar and Titanic saw Iron Man in a shoe we would have never imaged the self-absorbed genius to be as he attempts to cope with the devastation caused by Thanos, is driven by hopelessness and even becomes a dad and addresses the issue of his self-interest and of course heart-breaking sacrifice of his life that made movie-goers tear soaked.

Starring in a total of nine MCU movies, also making a cameo in The Incredible Hulk, Downey Jr. has remained at the heart of the franchise throughout. Talking to Washington Post, Joe said that he believes Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., deserves an Academy Award for his performances across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“His cumulative body of work from these movies is staggering,” Russo said. “If you look at the work over just even the last four films he’s done, it’s phenomenal… He deserves an Oscar perhaps more than anyone in the last 40 years because of the way that he has motivated popular culture. He has the world in tears right now’’ Russo said.

As of now, Heath Ledger is the only actor to have won an Oscar for a superhero film, being awarded Best Supporting Actor posthumously for his role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Recently in the Oscars, Black Panther had seven nominations and three wins shedding new light into how superhero movies are perceived in the Oscars.

Robert Downey Jr. has so far received two Oscar nominations in his career for playing Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin, and a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 2009’s Tropic Thunder. And regarding the Oscar win, fans are all in favour of Downey going home with the golden statute.
