The show will be launched by HBO Max in May. According to Variety, each actor is expected to receive $2.5 million for taking part in the special. ''Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together -- we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friends library,'' Kevin Reilly, chief content officer at HBO Max, said in a statement.
"I became aware of 'Friends' when it was in the very early stages of development and then had the opportunity to work on the series many years later and have delighted in seeing it catch on with viewers generation after generation. It taps into an era when friends and audiences gathered together in real time and we think this reunion special will capture that spirit, uniting original and new fans," he added.
The episode won't be a fictional piece where the cast get into the skin of their characters but will be a one-time show for an hour or so. The episode will revolve around the theme of 'a retrospective and interviews with the cast' and would possibly be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. The show, was a phenomenon during its 10-year run and later went on to find cult status with new audiences through TV reruns and Netflix
