Joaquin Phoenix playout as Arthur Fleck in Todd Phillips ‘Joker’ is headed off with an eight-minutes standing ovation. Dubbed as a ‘masterpiece’ the origin story of Fleck’s descend into madness have been called a ‘most terrifying one yet’ by critics. The laudation for the dark movie was very well played out at the Venice Film Festival when it received an eight-minutes long ovation for the first watchers.

Joaquin Phoenix’s film – a stand-alone Warner Bros. movie is intended to be the first in a series of DC-based movies which are separate from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) tells the story of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a failed stand-up comedian in the early 1980s who gets sucked into Gotham’s criminal underworld.

Phoenix who have been nominated thrice for the Oscars also leads the Oscar 2020 race with odds of 9/4 according to NME. Tom Hanks tails the Joker with odds of 3/1 for his role as Mr Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood while Taron Egerton has a 10/3 chance for his acclaimed turn as Elton John in Rocketman and Antonio Banderas has a 7/2 shot for Pain and Glory.
