Sir Patrick Stewart is all set to go, where he has been before. The 78-year-old actor will reprise his Star Trek: New Generation character - Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a new series on CBS All Access, the current home of Star Trek: Recovery.

Stewart confirmed his return to the franchise on Saturday at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas, where he made a surprise appearance on stage along with Star Trek: Discovery co-creator Alex Kurtzman.

“I will always be very proud to have been a part of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation,’ but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with ‘Star Trek’ had run its natural course.

“It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over,” Hollywood Reporter quoted Stewart as saying

According to an announcement made by the CBS All Access, the new series will not be a reboot or prequel of The Next Generation but instead will narrate the story of the next chapter of Picard’s life.

However, the details about the new series, including its titles, episode count and the premiere date, were not revealed.

Initially, the 78-year-old veteran actor played the role of Picard throughout the “Next Generation’s” seven season-run and four films. His last appearance as Picard was in “Star Trek: Nemesis”.

Stewart is repped by ICM, Independent Talent Group, and Anonymous Content. The new series hails from Alex Kurtzman, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, and Kirsten Beyer.
