Samuel L. Jackson has responded to Martin Scorsese’s earlier comment that Marvel is ‘not cinema’. Jackson who has been part of MCU for quite some time now as S.H.I.E.L.D agent Nick Fury has some words for the exceptional filmmaker, “I mean that’s like saying Bugs Bunny ain’t funny. Films are films. Everybody doesn’t like stuff either,” Jackson told Variety.
“We happen to, but not everybody ,” he continued. “There are a lot of Italian-Americans who don’t think he should be making films about them like that.”
‘’Everybody’s got an opinion, so I mean it’s okay,” Jackson added. “Ain’t going to stop nobody from making movies.”
In an earlier interview with a magazine, Scorsese said of Marvel movies,
“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being’’ the Irishman director commented.
Following Scorsese’s comments, Marvel directors such as James Gunn, Joss Wheldon expressed disappointments over the filmmaker’s comments given how he is regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all times.
James Gunn who is behind Guardians of the Galaxy wrote, “Martin Scorsese is one of my 5 favourite living filmmakers. I was outraged when people picketed The Last Temptation of Christ without having seen the film. I’m saddened that he’s now judging my films in the same way. That said, I will always love Scorsese, be grateful for his contribution to cinema, and can’t wait to see The Irishman.”
Scorsese is currently promoting his new movie The Irishman starring Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. The film will premiere in selected UK cinemas on November 8 before the official release on Netflix on November 27.
