Beyond The Clouds review: Ishaan Khatter packs solid punch in Majid Majidi directorial

When Oscar-nominated filmmaker Majid Majidi forays into Hindi cinema, you can expect a masterpiece. The renowned director, who is known for films like Children of Heaven and Baran has made a splashing entry in Bollywood with Beyond The Clouds.

The slum setting of the Ishaan Khatter and Malavika Mohanan starrer will remind you of Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. The story follows the life of the two siblings Taara and Aami, who are orphaned in their childhood.

Beyond The Clouds is on high on emotions and takes you on a roller coaster ride. Majid manages to beautifully utilise the child artists in his cinematic narrative. The Iranian director has also done a good job when it comes to bringing on-screen Mumbai’s grunge, brothel areas, dhobi ghat and slum life.

Ishaan, who makes his debut on the silver screen with the film, plays a petty drug dealer Aamir. The budding actor easily fits into the character and is full of potential.

Ishaan brings zest to his role, looks confident and packs a solid punch as Aamir. It won’t be wrong to call him as the anchor of the film, which otherwise looks disjointed at times.

Talking about Malavika Mohanan, the Malayali actress does justice to her role of Tara, despite having limited screen presence.

The flick set against the backdrop of Mumbai is all about how you deal with the challenges, life throws up at you. Everyone is good but it is actually the situations which mould and affect us. Whether you let your goodness take charge or allow the fierce negative emotions like greed to lead you to a hollow path, is what the movie tries to put forward.

Though the movie falls apart at places, it still manages to capture your attention and can be watched for Majid’s cinematic excellence.
