Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is reuniting Mani Ratnam for her upcoming film, an adaptation of the epic novel written in Tamil, titled 'Ponniyin Selvan.'
Aishwarya will play a dual role in the film, Nandini, and her mother mute mother, Queen Mandakini Devi. In the film, Nandini will be wife to Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, who will be played by Telugu star Mohan Babu. Rai excited about her comeback with a period drama revealed that the dial role was the reason she chose to do the film.

As for the rest of the cast, even without any final announcement fans are speculating Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Amitabh Bachchan, Anushka Shetty, Keerthy Suresh, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Amala Paul will join the bandwagon. One other actor who has confirmed his collaboration with Mani Ratnam is Vikram.Â
Backed by Lyca Productions, the royal tale will go on floor next year. The pre-production work for 'Ponniyin Selvan' has already commenced as the makers are busy building huge sets to shoot crucial portions of the film.
The novel Ponniyin Selvan follows a Chola dynasty King Arulmozhivarman during the 10th and 11th centuries.
For the uninitiated, Aishwarya made her acting debut in 1997 with a dual role in Mani Ratnam's Tamil political drama film Iruvar that also features Mohanlal, Tabu, Prakash Raj in prominent roles.
