National Film Award winning Assamese filmmaker Munin Barua breathed his last on Saturday at his Guwahati residence. He was 72. The talented director is survived by his wife and two children.

The celebrated filmmaker was a well-known name in the Assamese film industry. Some of his notable movies include Nayak, Barood, Dinabandhoo and Priyar Priyo.

Munin Barua received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Assamese for Dinabandhoo.  

He was credited for paving way for a new era in the industry with his film Hiya Diya Niya.The movie became a roaring success at the box office and broke several records.

Munin was awarded Life Time Achievement Award 2017 from Prag Cine Awards for his contribution towards Assamese cinema. His work in Assamese films brought him several laurels.

Barua who was fondly called as Bhaimon Da started his career in the industry as director and scriptwriter in the mid-1970s. He penned down scripts for several films like Bowari, Sonmoina, Ghar-Sansar, Mon-Mandir, to name a few.
