Srijit Mukherji faces legal notice for upcoming Netaji film 'Gumnaami' teaser

New Delhi:

National Award winning Bengali filmmaker Srijit Mukherji's latest outing Gumnaami will see a Durga Puja release. A day after the teaser was dropped the movie has landed controversy over the depiction of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose as 'Gumnami Baba'

Accoprding to ANI, the filmmaker has been sent a notice from a lawyer on behalf of his client one Debabrata Roy,asking him, to refrain from portraying facts while depicting the story of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in the film 'Gumnami'

The film is based on a legend, 'Gumnami Baba', an ascetic spotted in Uttar Pradesh in the 1970s who many believed was freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in disguise.

The film stars veteran Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee in the titular role.

According to the teaser the movie is based on the many speculations around Netaji's death and the belief that he was captured by Russia where he was tortured to death.

The teaser also shows a glimpse of Mahatma Gandhi, who sent a telegram to Bose's family requesting them to stop Bose's funeral ceremony, further instigating that maybe Bose is alive.

The director, who received acclaim for his National Award-winning Bengali outing Ek Je Chilo Raja, told Press Trust of India that he had been toying with the idea ever since he read a newspaper article on the ascetic in 2016.

Bose's family members has earlier claimed that terming Gumnami Baba as Netaji in disguise without any documentary or photographic evidence is a ''criminal offence''.

Unfazed by their claim, Mukherjee wrote on Twitter, "To answer your threat to gag me, I will stay in my country and make this film. If you drag me to court, I will borrow production design ideas from the court setting and make this film.''

''If you put me in jail, I will write a few more drafts of the script, fine-tune it and make this film,'' the filmmaker added in his tweet.
