Hailed as the queen of Indian daily soaps, TV producer Ekta Kapoor feels stories revolving around supernatural elements still remain unexplored on the small screen.
“As a producer, I feel supernatural territory is still unexplored in TV. We don’t see many shows coming up on those lines,” Ekta told PTI. She recently backed popular fantasy show “Naagin” and is all set with her next, “Kawach..Kaali Shaktiyon se”.
“Today we watch American shows like ‘Game of Thrones’, movies like ‘Harry Potter’ and even animated films where Hollywood has embraced the magic realism,” she said.
Ekta says often the audience reacts to shows from the west on supernatural elements more positively than the ones made in India but even that is slowly changing.
“We have these things (supernatural stories) in our folklore. It is our legacy and yet we haven’t really done much regarding that. When we see similar concepts in the west, of dragons and demons, we lap it up easily.” “But sometimes our audience finds difficult to consume what we present here. That is changing though. People are opening up to it.”
Inspired by the mythology of “Savitri and Satyavan”, “Kawach..Kaali Shaktiyon Se” is a finite series. It stars Mona Singh, former “Bigg Boss” contestant Maheck Chahal and “Yeh Hai Mohabatein” actor Vivek Dahiya.
Ekta says she decided to back the project as it was a curious mix of Indian mythology and popular Hollywood film “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”.
“I really liked the concept. This is like Emily Rose in India, never done before. It is a love triangle with crimes of passion done through black magic and possession. It was very interesting for me,” the 41-year-old producer said. The show airs on Colors.
