Swara Bhasker is returning to the theatres with a movie that deals with homosexuality and the struggles involved in finding acceptance in society. Titled Sheer Qorma, the trailer of the movie that also stars Divya Dutta, Shabana Azmi in pivotal roles is out. After Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan this is the second film of the year that deals with same sex relationships.
The trailer opens with a dining room conversation where Swara Bhasker is as Sitara is seen as a Cananda based Pakistan origin woman who is in love with Saira played by Divya. The couple has been together for ten hearts in Toronto and are not visiting Saira parents and family for their acceptance. Talking about her identity, Saira says she identifies herself as a non-binary individual and uses gender neutral pronouns ‘they, their, them’.
The mother played by Shabana Azmi however is not in favour of their relationship and called it ‘against the law of nature’ that will make her suffer in hell.
As the couple and the family try to appease the mother, they finally decide that they waited for 15 years for her to change her mind and now they are tired and time is running out. The movie has powerful dialogues like, “Hasn’t this very nature created Saira and Sitara?” “Have they been created by any other God?”
Judging by the trailer, the film seems to have been set over just a couple of days. The suspicion element is less as the trailer almost conveys the entire story.
Sheer Qorma also stars former Bigg Boss contestant Priya Mallik, Kalyanee Mulay, Jitin Gulati and has been written , directed by Faraz Arif Ansari’ of Sisak, Silvat, Dulha Wanted fame. This movie will be his maiden project as a director.
When asked about having Divya Dutta on board, Faraz revealed that she was his only choice even while writing the film. He said, “Divya Dutta and Swara Bhasker are two celebrated names in the industry and strong allies of the LGBTQIA+ community. It was an easy decision to approach them. In fact, when I started writing the film, I had Divya in my mind, and already saw her playing this role.”
The trailer does not announce a commercial release date. The movie will for the time being screened at film festivals only.
