Veteran filmmaker Mira Nair is in India for the shoot of her upcoming BBC web series, The Suitable Boy starring Ishaan Khattar and Tabu and the filmmaker is calling ut Lucknow police to release one of her actors who was arrested during the CAA protests at the city.
Protests against the amended Citizenship Act 2019, that started in Assam and Bengal last week, soon spread to Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow too after Meerut saw on Thursday, violent protests as people in large number rallied on roads.
A number of protesters were also said to be beaten and jailed by the police.
The namesake director took to Twitter to share that one of the actresses jailed for protesting in Lucknow and demanded her release.
"This is our India now - Appalling: our #SuitableBoy actress, Sadaf Jafar, beaten and jailed for peaceful protest in Lucknow! Join me in demanding her release," she wrote in her tweet.

The police in Lucknow cracked down on protesters using tear gas and batons after the agitation against Citizenship Act turned violent in Hazratganj area of old city. According to reports, protesters pelted stones and set many vehicles on fire during the protests. According to ANI, a media OB van has also been set ablaze. Protesters also torched vehicles parked outside a police post.
