West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday met former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and said that in a one-to-one fight, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be politically eliminated.

Banerjee, who is in Delhi for a four-day visit to discuss an anti-BJP alliance agenda, met Gandhi and said that whenever she is in the national capital, she makes it a priority to meet her. She also said that they had a political discussion, where she quoted that one-is-to-one party was needed in 2019.

Banerjee asserted her wish for Congress’ support to form a regional parties front alliance which is being talked about.

"Whenever I come here I meet her, we share a good relation. I enquired about her health, also had political discussion, I said that the country wants it to be one-is-to-one in 2019, jo party jahan strong hai wahan usko ladna chahiye. We want Congress to help the regional parties' front that is being talked about, so as to facilitate a one-is-to-one fight. This one-is-to-one fight will eliminate BJP politically," Banerjee said.

The West Bengal chief minister reached Delhi on Monday for a four-day visit with an initiative to forge an alliance among the Opposition parties so that the BJP is defeated in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

On Tuesday, Banerjee met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar with the same attempt of stitching a federal third-party front to defeat the BJP.

Banerjee claimed that the BJP, which is currently ruling the Centre, is the most communal party and its members had communalised the idea of Hinduism. She directly attacked the BJP over the no-confidence motion, and said, “Which government doesn’t take up a no-confidence motion. The BJP is scared that many of its own MPs will not vote.”

On Wednesday, the Trinamool Congress chief also held a meeting with senior BJP leaders Yashwant Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha, and Arun Shourie. On contrary, these three senior leaders had expressed their discontent with PM Modi-led BJP’s decisions.

Banerjee also expressed her wish to meet BSP chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow, but only if they will invite her.

“Will certainly go meet if they (Mayawati-Akhilesh Yadav) call us for a meeting to Lucknow,” she added.
