At least 10 people were injured after a clash broke out between members of ABVP and NSUI outside the former’s office in Ahmedabad. The incident took place when NSUI was holding a protest outside the ABVP office in the city against recent violence in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night. Police had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
NSUI condemned the incident and alleged that the "autocratic behaviour of the BJP has resulted in another similar event where the NSUI workers were brutally beaten".
"The real face of this government has now been unveiled and is working against constitutional values. It is time that the country stands together against these fascist forces," NSUI national president Neeraj Kundan said in a statement.
The Congress has also condemned the incident and demanded strict action against the culprits. "A deplorable act by ABVP goons & clearly reflective of their violent tendencies. We strongly condemn this act of terror & demand swift action against the perpetrators. How can the BJP stand idly by as innocent students are brutalised? They have turned India into a war zone," Congress wrote on Twitter.
The clash took place in the backdrop of JNU violence in which over 30 students, including JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh, were injured. They were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre in Delhi for treatment. Meanwhile, Hindu Rashtra Dal has claimed responsibility for the attack at JNU.
Hindu Raksha Dal national convenor Pinki Choudhary said the cadres of his outfit had barged into the university campus on January 5 and perpetrated the attack students and faculty members. Choudhary said if the anti-national activities in other universities are not clamped down, they will too come under the radar of his outfit.
