Two kanwariyas were killed and several others were injured after a trolley overturned in Uttar Pradesh’ Kanpur on Wednesday. News Nation has learnt that several kanwariyas were travelling in the trolley, which overturned during the morning hours. The exact cause of the accidents is still not known. Several onlookers were seen helping out the injured. It took some time for the officials to clear the road. The accident coincides with the first day of the holy month of Saavan. The month-long kanwar yatra also began today. It is especially popular in north India. Last year, drones and a helicopter were used for aerial surveillance during the Kanwar Yatra. Snipers and teams of Anti-Terror Squad were positioned at crucial spots to ensure security of thousands of pilgrims. However, the yatra also plagued with several controversies. From playing blaring music to hooliganism, the kanwariays were in news for wrong reasons.
In fact, which was the ‘menace’ that the Supreme Court had to make a terse observation. "Damage to public properties is a serious issue... This is a grave situation and this must stop. We will take action and won't wait for amendments," the court said.
Responding to the comments in court, Justice DY Chandrachud had said, "In Allahabad, Kanwarias blocked half the highway." The then Chief Justice Dipak Misra had said, "You may burn your own house and be a hero but you cannot damage third party property."
