As many as 773 COVID-19 cases were reported in India in the last 24 hours, taking the total count to 5,194, the Union health ministry said on Wednesday. Whereas, the death count in India rose to 149. During the daily press briefing on Wednesday, health ministry’s joint secretary Lav Agarwal stated that 32 people have died and 773 persons have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in India since Tuesday. “Total number of cases of coronavirus infections stands at 5,194 and the death toll at 149,” he added.
Lav Agarwal further said, “As the number of cases of COVID-19 are rising in the country, the central government’s response and preparedness along with states is rising accordingly.” “In hospitals, the focus is that infection prevention and control measures are followed so that health workers aren't infected by COVID-19,” he added.
“The central government has already told states to focus on building hospitals and on surveillance and contact tracing. There is a sufficient stock of hydroxychloroquine available in India,” Lav Agarwal concluded.
Meanwhile, an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) official stated that 1,21,271 tests for COVID-19 have been done in the country so far. “The COVID-19 death toll in India is too small to say that the number of deaths in Maharashtra is significantly high,” the official added.
