Call from across the border: After Trump-Kim, it should be India-Pakistan to end hostilities

After Trump-Kim, it should be India-Pakistan to end hostilities

The historic summit between Cold War foes US President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un should set a precedent for India and Pakistan to talk out their hostilities, Pakistani leader Shahbaz Sharif said on Tuesday.

“Singapore Summit between the US and North Korea should set a good precedent for Pakistan and India to follow,” said Sharif, a former chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Sharif, the PML-N president, said that the US and North Korea were locked in a bitter contest and threatening to use nuclear weapons against each other ever since the Korean war began.

“If the United States and North Korea can return from the brink of a nuclear flashpoint, there is no reason why Pakistan and India cannot do the same,” he asserted.

The Pakistani leader said that after the US and North Korea Summit, the international community should focus on the peace process in Afghanistan.

Described as the biggest diplomatic breakthrough of the 21st century, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un on Tuesday signed a “very comprehensive document” during their historic summit in Singapore and pledged to work towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
