Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad indicated that Aadhaar could be made mandatory for driving licenses.
After PAN and mobile phone numbers, now Aadhar will be needed for registration for new vehicles and driving licenses.
"We are planning to link driving license to Aadhaar. I have a word with Nitin Gadkari regarding this," Prasad said.
In order to prevent the issuance of multiple licenses, means adapted to beat the suspension of license for traffic, criminal offenses or for fake identity, Centre's plan to make Aadhaar mandatory for all driving license may happen next month.
The biometric details will help prevent such practices.
According to the report, the Union Road Ministry has already started work to roll out the measure by incorporating the necessary changes.
The ministry will urge states to adopt this "safe system", which will almost end the practice of people getting multiple licenses from different regional transport offices (RTOs) in different states.
