Aam Aadmi Party leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Saturday appealed to the party’s leadership, including Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, to make sure that the office bearers only get appointed on the basis of merit.

Addressing party leaders, including MLAs, and workers here in presence of Sisodia, the legislator from Bholath asserted that favouritism should not happen when appointing office bearers of the party.

"Organisation is the lifeline of the party. If we appoint wrong men there (as office bearers), then people get disappointed. I do not want to find faults here. My appeal to Manishji is that merit should be the only criteria for future appointments." Khaira said.

"When you appoint people on merit in Punjab, we can definitely build our party at the ground level and will win the 2022 Assembly polls," he said.

Khaira added, "I am fighting, but I am pained to say that we have wasted the last one year. Had we not wasted it, we could have sent the Akalis to their home packing and we would have our own flags at Shahkot."

Bypoll to Shahkot Assembly seat is set to be held on May 28.

"I am happy that Balbir Singh (AAP's Punjab unit co-president) is working hard," Khaira said.

Khaira hit out at the Amarinder Singh government, alleging that the SAD and the ruling Congress are ‘two sides of the same coin’ and went on to accuse it of failing to honour its poll promises such as farm loan waiver.

"Over 400 farmers have committed suicide and farm debt is pegged at Rs one lakh crore, but the state government waived just a fraction of that loan," he said.
