Abdullah Azam Khan, son of Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, was detained outside the Jauhar University by the team of Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday. The cops nabbed Abdullah as they feared that he would try to influence the ongoing probe regarding the alleged graft at the varsity. The team was continuing its raid, which began on Tuesday. The detention comes a day after an FIR was lodged against Abdullah Azam Khan for allegedly forging documents for his passport. The FIR was lodged after BJP’s Akash Saxena complained that the sitting legislator used fake documents regarding his age proof to get the passport.
On Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh Police issued a lookout circular (LOC) against former Circle Officer Aale Hassan in connection with land encroachment cases related to Azam Khan's Jauhar University. The LOC against Hassan was issued has asked the director of the university to provide documents related to the purchase of land for the campus.
"Recently, a complaint was lodged after a house was allegedly demolished to acquire land. Taking cognizance of the complaint, a case was registered against the Municipal Corporation Chairman,
Jauhar University security in-charge and others who are involved in the case," Arun Kumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) told news agency ANI.
"As of now, identities of eight people are known. However, the identities of 20-25 people are yet to be ascertained in connection with the case. Based on the evidence, further action will be initiated," he said.
Police also carried out raids at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University over allegations of stealing over 9000 books from Madrasa Alia. Many of the books stolen were rare manuscripts, according to reports.
Azam Khan was in news for his sexist remark and apology to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Rama Devi. He had said that he had ‘no intention to hurt the Chair.’ "I have been an MLA for nine times, a minister several times, a Rajya Sabha member too. I was a parliamentary Affairs Minister too. I know legislative procedures," he said.
“I had no intention to hurt the Chair & if the Chair feels insulted by my comments, I apologize,†the Rampur MP added. However, Rama Devi tore into Azam Khan and Akhilesh Yadav after the former was forced to apologise for his remarks last week.
Khan is known for making controversial statements. In the run up to the Lok Sabha polls, the SP leader was facing criticism for his "khaki underwear" jibe at BJP leader Jaya Prada in one of his election speeches. The Election Commission of India, miffed over his inflammatory remarks at several places in Uttar Pradesh, barred him from campaigning for 72 hours and served him a show cause notice.
