Adhir Ranjan Choudhury’s 'UN monitoring’ gaffe during Article 370 debate embarrasses Congress

Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhury has once again embarrassed his party with his statement in Lok Sabha that 'J-K issue is being monitored by UN'. “You say that it is an internal matter. But it is being monitored since 1948 by the UN, is that an internal matter? We signed Shimla Agreement & Lahore Declaration, what that an internal matter or bilateral?” Choudhury said during a heated debate on Modi government’s move of revoking Article 370.

He said the government had thrown rules and regulations out of the window by proposing to create two Union territories out of Jammu and Kashmir. 

Reacting to it, Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that Jammu and Kashmir was an inseparable part of India and both Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Aksai Chin were very much a part of the whole entity.

Shah went on to say that BJP leaders will give up their lives to secure PoK and added that whenever he mentions Jammu and Kashmir, it includes the areas held by Pakistan and China.

Earlier on Monday, the government revoked Article 370 to take away Jammu and Kashmir's special status, and proposed the bifurcation of the state into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, a bold and far-reaching decision that seeks to redraw the map and future of a region at the centre of a protracted militancy movement.

Fulfilling an electoral promise of the BJP less than 90 days after the Modi 2.0 government took power, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision in the Rajya Sabha, which approved both the resolution and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation bill. The chiefs of the two parties, NC's Omar Abdullah and PDP's Mehbooba Mufti, as well as People's Conference's leader Sajjad Lone were arrested in Srinagar on Monday evening, officials said.
