It seems Indian state education boards are trying to teach history of their own preference to students. Few days back, BJP-ruled Rajasthan dropped former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru from Class 8 social science textbooks. Going one step ahead Left-ruled Tripura has removed the entire Indian history from Class 9 textbooks.
The board has included Mahatma Gandhi’s name in the test, that too not for his contribution to India’s freedom movement but for his views on cricket. The book features the Russian and French revolutions and pages over the birth of cricket in England, Nazism and the rise of Adolf Hitler, and the history of agriculture.
There is also a chapter on the Santhal rebellion and deprivation of forest-dependent tribals during the British rule.
However, officials have denied chief minister Manik Sarkar’s communist government has not to do in the new syllabus. The BJP has raised the issue and claimed the Left wants to paint everything red in Manipur.
