Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Friday in for a surprise to the pleasure of all as Congress party president Rahul Gandhi on Friday, after his sharp attack on the former in his speech, walked straight to him and hugged him.

After a scathing criticism of the Modi government on several issues, including Rafale jet deal, Gandhi walked across to the Prime Minister and hugged him.

Taken aback by the surprising gesture, Modi initially drew a blank and failed to hug him back. But he soon recovered and called Gandhi back and patted him on the back.

"This is what it means to be a Hindu," Gandhi said after returning to his seat amid a big applause from his party members, including his mother Sonia Gandhi.

Slammed for his reported remarks that "Congress is a Muslim party", Gandhi said, "Prime Minister Modi, BJP and ...have taught me what it means to be a Congress person, the meaning of being a real Indian, and what it means to be a real Hindu. For this, I thank them."

Gandhi then said he has no anger or hatred against the Prime Minister and the Bharatiya Janata Party despite all criticism against him.
